 OCTOBER
On Thursday, the 2nd of October 2008, Explore club organized a celebration of one of their role models in the person of M.K. MAHATMA GANDHI. Explore club was also working in line with the United Nations General Assembly unanimous resolution on the 15th of June 2007 to observe October 2nd, the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi as the INTERNATIONAL DAY OF NON-VIOLENCE.

WHY GANDHI?
The name Gandhi is a household one all over the world. His vision and his sense of humility coupled with his struggle for the emancipation of the less privileged, the equality of all human races, his Satyagraha philosophy and his love for all had endeared him to a lot of people all over the world. Explore Club is one of such organizations that had found his qualities so endearing that they have adopted the great soul as one of their role models.

It was based on the above that Explore Club organized a celebration of the great soul and flagged off our campaign on one of his popular sayings, “BE THE CHANGE YOU WISH OTHERS TO BE”.

NOVEMBER
The 1st Abuja celebrity reading was organized by Explore Club, in line with the BE THE CHANGE campaign which kicked off on the 2nd of October. Celebrity reading was a programme designed to motivate children to read by inviting their favourite stars and role models to public reading demonstration.

Children were invited to read passages and extracts from books, and they were rewarded for their accomplishments with praise, recognition and gifts. Celebrity reading was simply adding fun to reading which we believe shall arouse reading interest in young people. The aim was to encourage and promote reading culture among young people and we believe that “when we read, we will lead”.

The 1st Abuja Celebrity reading was held on Saturday, 8th November 2008 at Maitama Amusement Park. In attendance were pupils, students, parents, book publishers/ sellers, the media etc.
