Goodwill messages came from the Representative of the FCT Universal Basic Education Board, and other special guests. The entire staff and pupils of the school appreciated our visit.


On the 24th of May, Explorers’ Book & Readers Club embarked on a Mentoring/ Role modeling programme at Federal Government Boys’ College, Garki Abuja. Mr. Mike Omeri, the Director General of National Orientation Agency was the mentor/ role model. This very impactful event left the students with the hope and believe that with hard work and seriousness in their studies, the sky will be their limit.

The DG also spoke to the students about ‘Do the right thing, transform Nigeria’ campaign. The students presented a poetry on the campaign theme. Books donation was made to the school.


JUNE – OCTOBER : GROOMING THE CHAMPIONS
The second season of Grooming the Champions, an academic competition among students kick started.  The competition featured Federal  Government Colleges within and around the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The schools were:

  • Federal Government Boys’ College Garki
  • Federal Government Girls’ College Bwari
  • Federal Government Academy Suleja
  • Federal Government Girls College Abaji
  • Federal Government College Kwali
  • Federal Government College Rubochi
  • Federal Science and Technical College Orozo.

Grooming the Champions is a Reading/Academic Competition aimed at encouraging students to read very widely. Here, students are expected to make impromptu discussion on any topic picked.

Topics for discussion cover topical issues; curriculum based subjects; personalities; parastatals / agencies / ministries; culture / ethnic groups;  sports / entertainment; citizenship / patrotism; national development; and environmental issues. 

The competition included original composition of poetry which was recited and  performed by the five (5) contestants from the various schools.
The competition  is of eviction model and was aired on television for thirteen (13) weeks.

 THE GATHERING OF CHAMPIONS

The Gathering of Champions Was a one-day seminar uniquely designed to reach out to young people in Nigeria. It was an attitudinal change and value reorientation programme targeted at preparing Nigerian youths (who are often referred to as future leaders) for leadership positions.

The programme aims at; Inculcating positive change in value and attitude; Building confidence and hope for a greater Nigeria in the youths; Refocusing and reorientation of the young ones; Inculcating the spirit of patriotism in the youths; Inculcating hard work and selfless    service in Nigerian youths; Promote and inculcate team / group work; Self actualization and talent discovery; A literate society; Well informed and patriotic citizens.

The seminar will feature talks on;

  • Corruption , Nigeria’s bane by ICPC
  • Hard drugs, the killer by NDLEA
  • Yes we can by a motivator

INDEPENDENCE READING

Our Organization in Collaboration with Dr. Jerry Agada Foundation celebrated Nigeria’s 52nd Independence with reading activities. This event held on Friday, 28th September 2012 At Government Secondary School Tudun Wada By 11am.
A compilation of the story of Nigeria was read by students and guests. There was reading in Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo languages. Braille reading was done by some blind persons.

National Orientation Agency provided some awareness/ sensitization materials that were given out to students. Books were donated to schools libraries and about 1,800 students and staff were at the event.

DECEMBER
The Grand Finale of our academic competition, Grooming the Champions Season 2 was carried out on Thursday, 6th December at Cyprain Ekwensi Complex, Arts & Culture Area 10 Abuja.  The final competition was among;
•    Federal Government College, Bwari
•    Federal Government College, Kwali
•    Federal Government College, Garki.


The result of the seven months of academic competition was as follows:
Federal Government Boys’ College Garki – FIRST POSITION
Federal Government Girls’ College Bwari – SECOND POSITION
Federal Government College Kwali – THIRD POSITION
Federal Science and Technical College Orozo – FOURTH POSITION
Federal Government College Rubochi – FIFTH POSITION
Federal Government Girls College Abaji – SIXTH POSITION

The prizes:
First Position – A gold Cup Trophy, One hundred thousand Naira Cash, Book to the School’s library.
Second Position – A Plaque, sixty thousand Naira, books to school’s library.
Third position – A plaque, forty thousand Naira, books to school’s library


Gifts were given to all the contestants, their teachers and all the officials who participated in the competition.
Some well meaning Nigerians were recognized and decorated as Read Ambassadors and by this decoration they agreed to work with organization in the campaign to Restore, Promote and Sustain Reading culture in Nigeria. The Read Ambassadors are;
